Located about 10 minutes east of downtown, Virginia Highlands got its name from the intersection of two main streets: Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue. In the early 1900s, a growing intown neighborhood that has become a diverse and trendy intown location formed around these two streets.

One of the most striking aspects of Virginia Highlands is the restaurant scene. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, you will find many original restaurants to choose from. The American Roadhouse is a great choice for an early morning breakfast. Patrons choose from a full course breakfast or an awakening espresso bar. Another great place for your early morning appetite is Murphy's. Here you can appreciate the craftsman's style architecture, along with a classic Bloody Mary and an array of breakfast items. If it's coffee you crave, visit one of the unique coffeehouses such as Aurora or the Highland Bagel Co.

Enjoy a peaceful stroll to one of the pleasing art galleries or local antique shops that display local art from hand-made pottery to distinctive jewelry. Along the way, there is trend-setting apparel at shops like Bill Hallman or Wayne Van Nguyen as well as unique shops with rare cigars, folk art, gourmet kitchenware and fine woodworking. John Howell Park would be a nice stop for the kids. Along the way enjoy the old-world charm of the 1930s bungalows and beautiful mature trees.

Once it's time for lunch, stop by Hand in Hand, an English pub known well for its outdoor patio to enjoy their famous fish and chips and wide variety of beers. To satisfy a craving for something authentic, try one of the many Thai restaurants like Surin's or Harry and Son's. The choices seem endless.

Start the evening off with appetizers at Noche, a distinctive tapas bar or enjoy live musical entertainment at local bars such as 10 High or Dark Horse. If you're more interested in a relaxing evening, enjoy a glass of wine with dinner at one of the countless choices of casual or fine dining restaurants like LaTovola, Harvest or Dish.
